Our School
Napanee District Secondary School, Home of the Hawks, is Limestone District School Board’s largest secondary school, offering an extensive range of programming. No other school in our area has as much variety to offer: high-end academic programs; technology programs that are second to none; and individual student programming, addressing a full range of academic abilities. We are located on three sites in the town of Napanee. Our main campus houses about 1200 students. Off-site we have two satellite locations. Our Gateway Learning Centre, the larger site, accommodates adults as well as students under the age of twenty one, requiring an alternate style of learning which features our Y.E.S. program (Youth Experiencing Success). Finally, we have a classroom for reluctant learners who are under sixteen years of age in a downtown, storefront location, referred to as “Connections”.

N.D.S.S. has a welcoming atmosphere with a wide range of extra-curricular activities and a dedicated and professional staff of teaching and support personnel. Our dramatic, music and athletic programs are well known in the community for their commitment to excellence. A major production every two years results in opportunity for students all of the time. Sears festival, Kiwanis music, concerts, coffee house and mini productions are salted among the seasonal sporting events. Currently our school has a respectable showing in all sports, but leads the area and province in boys’ and girls’ rugby, as well as girls’ hockey. Our students are the heart of N.D.S.S. and their enthusiasm and zest for life is truly inspiring. N.D.S.S. is a great place in which to spend your days - both as a student and a staff member!

Currently all staff are engaged in a school improvement program that they have endorsed focusing on strategies to engage our students more fully, to improve student achievement beyond current high standards and to maintain and continually improve a culture that already is the envy of others. These three words: engagement, achievement and culture form the cornerstone of our thinking and decision making at N.D.S.S. where our students are first and foremost in our minds as we plan events, activities and individual daily lessons.

The school is over one hundred years old with a physical plant that was constructed between 1962 - 1967. Currently it is being retrofitted with brand new plumbing and up to date heating systems. With an environmentally sound plan, this new system will include state of the art designs that will save millions of gallons of water, incorporate solar heating backup and supplement systems, and will provide fresh outside sources of air to every classroom. As with all areas of life at N.D.S.S., we are striving for excellence.
